Components of Nursery Decoration: The Vital Parts and The Dispensables
If any new member is going to become a part of your family,be it your first baby or any person by any relation, one of the most important criteria of your future planning with them is to look out for their nursery. Baby nursery requires consideration and thought of the area involved. Do you plan on having your newborn stay in your room in the beginning; or will your baby sleep in his or her own room right away? Are there siblings already in the room with their own needs? You may choose to have a nursery set aside for the baby but also purchase a co-sleeper or bassinet for the parents’ room at night, especially if there are plans to breast-feed. Putting baby to bed will be one of your simplest tasks: use a flat blanket under the baby and no sheets or other covers. It is always better to keep babies in thick comfortable clothing rather than under a barrage of blankets.
If and when a separate nursery is going to be used, proper baby equipment must be your top priority. The federal government routinely releases new standards pertaining to safe crib specifications, especially for the width of rail spacing. Although it’s tempting to use a family heirloom or antique crib, don’t–it’s not safe for the baby.
Baby bedding for the crib should fit snugly around the mattress so that the baby can’t get tangled up in it. Bedding for babies should be chosen based on durability as well as ease and speed in washing. White sheets are notorious for being easily stained and though you may be tempted to purchase highly decorative baby bedding instead, you might also want to consider its stain resistance. If you get dark colors and patterns, then you can conceal some of the larger stains on crib bedding.
Although a changing table is not a necessity, it is a welcome convenience. Once your child is out of diapers, it is time to trade in the dresser/changing table combination for a regular dresser with more capacity. Make sure that the changing table you select has rails and safety straps. Any changing table should include a cloth changing pad, also most likely in a dark color that will hide the unavoidable poop spots.
A diaper pail is the natural accompaniment to the table, though its composition depends on your needs. Disposable diapers require an odor resistance pail, preferably one with a barrier seal, while accessibility is essential for laundering of cloth diapers. Choose whatever works best for you, knowing that odors are hard to fight in the nursery in general.
While not absolutely vital, any mother who has been awakened at an early hour can tell you it is a welcome treat. Not only are used rocking chairs safe to buy, but they grow more comfortable as they age. Perhaps you can ask Grandma for one–as a peace offering, if needed!
Decoration is the last priority in preparing the nursery for baby, but it is also the most fun. It’s not necessary to limit yourself to designs created for infants. Think about your dreams for the baby or what makes your family special. It doesn’t take much to decorate a nursery, but doing it in a way that sparks your baby’s imagination, or even remind him of his family, is a great way to start. If you are creative, then your child will likely follow in your footsteps.
